Your alerts on top of Google Maps
Last updated : 13 October 2026
Speedix is a free Android app with no account, made for driving in France. It shows its alerts in a floating window on top of Google Maps: danger zones, never an exact location.
What Google Maps announces in France
Google Maps plans your route and tells you about traffic. In France, it does not announce danger zones. Since 2012 the law has banned giving the exact location of a speed check, and Google Maps does not offer the zone-based warning that remains allowed.
And Speedix?
Speedix sits on top of Google Maps and plans no route. Yours stays on screen, and a small window shows the danger zone, incident or report coming up. The voice alert reaches you at the same moment.
The window appears the same way on top of Waze or any other navigation app. You can move it freely on screen.
Two limits to know before installing. Speedix covers France only, and it exists on Android only.
As French law requires, Speedix announces an extended stretch of road and places nothing inside it. The details are on our compliance page.

Frequently asked questions
Does Google Maps show speed cameras in France?
No. French law bans giving the exact location of a speed check, and Google Maps does not announce danger zones in France either.
Does Speedix also work on top of Waze?
Yes, as it does on top of any other app.
Is it legal to show alerts on top of your GPS?
Yes, as long as the app announces a zone rather than a point. Speedix zones run for about 800 m in town, 2 km outside and 4 km on motorways.
Do I have to open Speedix for every trip?
Before you leave, yes. It then carries on by itself behind Google Maps, screen off included.
